1. Know your audience

Preparation is never a waste of time. Before you can write a killer dating ad, you have to research your target audience.

Browse the profiles of people you’d like to date, and note the phrases and points that catch your eye.

Control the urge to contact anyone straight away – writing your profile takes priority. Market research first, pick n’ mix later.

2. Think like your target

First law of attraction: people like people who are like themselves. We’re all egomaniacs.

So appeal to the people you like by writing a profile that’s just like theirs. They’ll be bowled over by how much you have in common.

So if you’re attracted by profiles written with a dry sense of humour, write yours with a dry sense of humour. If you respond to sincerity, write sincerely.

There’s little point in hooking up with a serial monogamist if you’re dying to settle down. This is a great advantage of online dating over the offline variety: you can get this stuff about of the way upfront.

If you’re looking for a life partner, mention it in your ad. Avoid mentioning previous relationships or break-ups, since it suggests that you haven’t moved on.

By the same token, if you’re an itchy-footed type who wants to travel the world in a couple of years, say so. This helps to attract similarly-inclined people, while helping to rule out the kind who want to settle down by the end of the month.

9. Tell the truth

Don’t lie in your profile. You want to attract people who’d like the real you, so there’s not much point in adding four inches to your height and taking five years off your age.
